There will be 3 common opponents you will face in Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow, and each enemy type has its own strengths, weaknesses, and semi-predictable behavior. If you know your enemies, you should have no trouble in successfully defeating them. Here is a list of the 3 most common enemies with a short description of their general traits.

Halberd Infantry– These guards are the most common enemies that you will fight in Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow. Halberd infantry units will often be found walking around on the ground while patrolling small areas. They are only aware of objects and enemies when they have a direct line of sight on them, which means you could easily sneak up on these guards. A common tactic you can use to defeat Halberd infantry is to wait until they walk away from you, then close in from behind to dispatch them before they detect you. If the halberd infantry unit turns around before you can reach him, however, you’ll soon be speared on his weapon unless you can beat a hasty retreat, preferably onto a low-hanging tree branch. Since these guards are unaware of objects and enemies above them, you can use trees as a safe spot to hide after being spotted by halberd infantry, or you can use them as a platform for staging an ambush from above. Just remember that whenever you attack these units, you must make sure that you’re attacking them from behind, because attacking an infantry unit head-on will always result in your death; Ninjas are trained for stealth, not for open conflict.

Archers– The second most common enemy you will face is the archer. Archers remain stationary at their post, and they’re quite often scattered throughout each stage on guard towers, raised platforms, or on tree branches. Archers are aware of movement in every direction and their bow allows them to use long-range attacks against whatever enemy they might spot; a good rule of thumb to use is, “if you can see them, they can see you”. Swift attacks are required if you want to take out an archer because of their enhanced awareness of their surroundings. The only opportunity afforded to you for an attack is the time it takes for the archer to draw his bow. Keep in mind that these archers always hit their mark, so you only have one chance to carry out a successful attack; this shouldn’t be a problem with a lone archer, but a grouping of 2 or more archers may pose a significant challenge. Nimble fingers are the only way to stay alive during those confrontations.

Knife Throwers– The most deadly of the common guards would have to be the knife throwers. These guards will fling a knife attached to a chain, and yank it back for a quick follow-up throw; combine this with a complete awareness of his surroundings, and you have a deadly anti-ninja unit. This guard will put you through a gauntlet of blades before you can ever reach him, so you have to carefully consider your approach before you commit yourself to action. The knife-thrower tends to attack, then jump to another platform before attacking again, then repeating this process until he has nowhere else to jump to. So far, the only known way to defeat this opponent is to move quickly and strike between one of his attacks.

Tread Lightly– While you move throughout each stage within Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow, you should remain vigilant for threats, such as bear traps, spike traps, and various soldiers. Rushing into a situation could easily have you within reach of an enemy soldier’s halberd or stepping into a vicious bear trap. Moving forward with caution while watching the edges of the screen for archers or other enemies is the best way to proceed. Don’t move too slowly, however, as pausing even for a moment makes you vulnerable to falling spike traps that you might not have seen overhead.

Plan Your Attack– If you follow our advice above and move cautiously, you should be able to plan out your actions when you spot an enemy rather than accidentally stumbling into a fight and hoping for the best. Make sure to utilize your tactical advantage of knowing where your enemies are by making a plan and sticking to it. Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow Review

Every once in a while, I manage to sink my brain and fat little fingers into an obscure app that I find while randomly browsing the Apple Store or Google Play store. Usually these game are decently rated, but lack the attention of the public eye; not terrible games by any means, but they lack the “oomph” that would sent them shooting to the top of the charts. I’ll play around with the app for a day or two before I delete it, but occasionally I’ll have a gem that I can’t seem to put down. Even though the graphics might not be that great, or the storyline is weak or cheesy, I still manage to have a blast whenever I play it. Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow is exactly that kind of game.

What do I like about Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow? Well, it’s a ninja game, and who doesn’t like ninjas? When I opened up the app, I expected a rather substandard app with a joystick and a couple buttons to control my character, but I was pleased by simple “tap to move and attack” controls; this meant I could execute several attacks within the span of a single second! After a couple of stages, I knew that the hack n’ slash action was going to sink its hooks deep into me, and I was right.

I discovered the special powers, which are very cool, and I enjoyed trying to best each opponent that stood in my way. I really enjoyed the monochromatic art style used in Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow, and it reminded me of Limbo, another game that I loved for the artwork. All in all, Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow definitely has the capacity to please many gamers, but there are some major flaws in the design of the game that can’t be overlooked.

The main screen that greeted me, along with the stage selection screen, was blurry and extremely low-quality. Maybe it lowered my expectations for Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow so much that the actual “meat” of the game was a pleasantly fun surprise, but I still count it as a negative. If your mobile app isn’t polished and good-looking, the overall experience you have with the app will be slightly less exciting and novel. The second set of issues I had with Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow was the extremely low-quality music and sound effects. Your character and your enemies repeat the same phrases over and over again as if they were talking birds who only know one phrase.

This led to some frustration later on in the game, but this flaw can be overlooked if you only play for short periods of time. The soundtrack that plays while you’re on the main menu or stage selection screen is absolutely unbearable; the audio quality is fuzzy, and the man chanting in the track is “pitchy” (the higher notes really heard my ears and head for some reason, even at a reasonable volume level). I can’t stand that soundtrack, but you only have to encounter it on the main screen or stage selection screen, which you won’t stay on for very long.

If you take both the good and bad into consideration, I think you’ll agree with me when I say that Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow can be quite fun, despite the fact that it needs some updates. A bit of spit n’ polish would make Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow suitable for the top charts, but as it is, it seems like an unfinished app with lots of potential for greatness. The flaws of Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow haven’t stopped me from playing yet, so I can definitely say that the good outweighs the bad, and I would recommend Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow to any casual gamer with an interest in ninja combat.

Artwork– Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow has an art style that is very similar to what you’d find in games such as Limbo; the monochromatic landscape lends a dark, sinister mood to Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow without creating a downright morbid or scary experience. I enjoy the artwork within the stages where you control your character, but the home screen and mission selection screen seems very low-def to me and could definitely use some work.

Artwork receives an 7/10.

Music/SFX– Fairly limited and very low quality, the music and SFX are a pretty big letdown. The aural element of mobile games is a big part of the overall experience, and it feels like barely any effort was put into this aspect of Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow. The enemies always say the same thing, your character has a small list of “catchphrases” that he occasionally uses, and the audio quality is terrible. It honestly hurts my ears to listen to the soundtrack on the main screen, but luckily it is not a main part of Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow.

Music/SFX receives a 4/10.

Story/Originality– There is no strong storyline to Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow, and the concept of rogue demon-ninja video games dates back to when I was younger (or before I was born), when I would frequently play free online flash games similar to Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow. The special abilities are original, however, and I like the custom artwork they used as a background for their missions stages.

Story/Originality receives a 5/10.

General Gameplay– I’m fond of fast-paced action games, so Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow naturally caught my interest. I enjoy the challenge of attacking enemies while trying to avoid an assortment of traps and other dangers. The artwork is definitely aesthetically pleasing, which lends to the overall enjoyment. The only real downsides of Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow are the limited variety of SFX, the fuzzy menus, and the shallow nature of the game; the former being a small complaint, and the latter being an unfair complaint, especially considering that Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow is free to play. Overall, Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow is a fun game to play whenever you have a couple minutes to spare and nothing important to do.

General Gameplay receives a 7/10.

Addictiveness– When all is said and done, I haven’t really stopped playing Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow since I first downloaded it on the Google Play store. While this app does have certain aspects that could be tremendously improved with a bit of effort, I feel that Dead Ninja Mortal Shadow is worth the download, especially considering how preoccupied you’ll soon become with this app. Got lots of spare time on your hands, but nothing to do with it?
