For those of you who like microtransactions, I bring great news – Smash Monsters – City Rampage has them. Besides the Energy used for the character to make actions and the gold used to upgrade your monsters and buildings, there is one resources called Element X that is used to create monsters and is considered being a premium currency. The price for the Element X varies depending on the amount you wish to buy – the least you can get in one purchase is 30 Units of Element x in exchange of $14.99 while the most you can is 1,700 units with $499.99. There are several other micro-transactions available such as Power Packs (getting a small amount of Element X each day for a month) or game bundles.

Smash Monsters: City Rampage Tips and Tricks

Smash Monsters – City Rampage Review

Now that the Christmas has just passed, most of you will get their chance to be naughty once again. One of the uncommon themes encountered in games on all platforms is the one where you are playing as a villain. Smash Monsters- City Rampage is exactly that kind of a game – you will smash cities and it will be with the help of your personal monsters.

In my opinion, the best feature Smash Monsters – City Rampage has, is the ability of creating monsters. This is a really common feature but the way it is implemented in is really authentic. You will use the aid of a mad scientist and you will combine different dangerous elements to create life. After that, you will feed them with blobs in order to get them powerful enough to smash cities. That’s beautiful. In addition to this, your monsters will be categorized by rarity and will have their own skillset along with weaknesses and advantages.

Another great thing about Smash Monsters – City Rampage is the fact that there is a multiplayer implementation where you will be able to raid your friends’ cities and defend your districts. You will use your city as a source of income that will help you be more and more dangerous. The game is very challenging because the rock-paper-scissors combat system and because the difficulty is pretty high if you play without a strategy in your mind. One last good thing worth mentioning is perhaps the possibility of deciding for yourself how much you want to be involved – you can let the monsters auto-attack and you can change the game speed or you can do it all by yourself.

Here comes the part where I say what I would change about Smash Monsters – City Rampage if given the possibility or what I plainly don’t like. I will keep it brief, I promise. First of all, like usual, I am not sure of the Energy system, mobile games are once again starting to have. If someone told me 2 months ago that this idea will be popular again I would have definitely called him/her crazy. Mobile gaming is designed for people who have limited time of playing – don’t take this away from them. Let users play for how long as they want and try to monetize other stuff in-game.

Secondly, one other thing I don’t like in Smash Monsters – City Rampage is the fact that the game is, at first, a little bit too slowly paced. The multiplayer is basically the best feature the game has and in order to reach it, you must play a lot of the campaign which can be pretty boring. Last but not least, I must make sure that the voice of the people is heard. Apparently, there are a lot of issues with older devices even though the developers say that Smash Monsters – City Rampage is compatible with them. There will be a lot of crashes, freezes or even connecting problems. I personally didn’t encounter them but from what I’ve read, a lot of people experience them and that should not be the case.

Overall, Smash Monsters – City Rampage is a game I definitely recommend. Think of it as my guilty pleasure – good gameplay, fun artwork and interesting sound effects. Add to that an intriguing plot and you charmed me. You should try it as soon as possible because there is a high chance of enjoying it.

Ratings

Artwork: Smash Monsters – City Rampage gets a rating of 8 out of 10 for its artwork. The theme is really colorful but that’s not a surprise because all the design of the game is cartoon-oriented. The character design is really cool and every single one of them looks interesting and unique. The environment is also pretty good-looking and you can easily see that the developers worked hard to achieve this. There are some animations effects but I don’t consider them amazing and that is probably because the graphic engine is not that modern. Nevertheless, the game, taken as a whole, has an above average artwork.

Music & SFX: I give Smash Monsters – City Rampage a rating of 8 out of 10 for its music and sound effects. The soundtrack of the game matches the theme and it provides (with the aid of the artwork) an overall great atmosphere. The songs (yes, there is more than one) are…intriguing because on one hand you realize that you are going to play a satirical game but on one hand that feels serious. The sound effects are interesting as well but unfortunately they don’t live up to the expectations. However, the developers suggest wearing headphone while playing and I advise you to do this, as well.

Story/Originality: The game gets a rating of 9 out of 10 at this section. If something is certain about Smash Monsters – City Rampage, that’s the originality of it. The idea of playing with the ‘bad guys’ is uncommon but in this game, it is expanded even further – you play with bad guys which whole purpose is to destroy cities. Everything is done in a satirical way so you will not get in trouble, no worries. There are a lot of original elements such as the combat system (turned-based but in a unique way).  There is also some sort of a story – villains will always have a hidden reason – but nothing too complicated or complex.

General Gameplay: I give Smash Monsters – City Rampage a rating of 9 out of 10 for its general gameplay. The tutorial from the beginning is anything a new user needs in order to understand how the game is meant to be played. There aren’t any hidden mechanics and even though a strategy will be required in order to succeed, you can’t really say that the game is hard and is not suitable for casual players. The controls are great and there isn’t anything vague about the settings. For the time I’ve played I haven’t encountered any major bugs, freezes or crashes (guess I was lucky).

Addictiveness: Smash Monsters – City Rampage gets a rating of 8 out of 10 for its addictiveness. The game is surprising in a good way from this point of view. You have an interesting enough campaign mode, you have a nice multiplayer implementation and there is a character progression in place (both for you and your monsters). You also have some login bonuses, achievements and if you are lucky you can get a free offer where you will get epic monsters for a given period of time. The only issue with the game at this section is probably the repetition of the actual gameplay – attack a city (AI or human controlled), rinse and repeat. You can’t basically do anything else.

Overall, Smash Monsters – City Rampage gets a rating of 8.4 out of 10. The game is really solid and it will be no surprise if it reaches the tops and stays there for a decent amount of time.
